Nikos Koulis, Athens
“The first Nikos Koulis Jewels Boutique in Athens, located in a posh shopping area in the city centre, is a product of a constant, evolving intercourse between masculine and feminine elements. The sources of inspiration behind its creation are universal: references to a G. Gershwin melody, a phrase by F. Scott Fitzgerald, the decolourised photography of classic films, as well as the electric vibe of New York, Paris and Shanghai, during the 1930s and 1940s.
The result is an atmospheric space resembling a woman’s boudoir, combined with the mystery of an austere men’s lounge. The eternal play of men’s attraction to women is reflected in all facets of the design: fine grey flannel on the walls, grey, black and dark green marble, intense metals such as bronze and black iron, display cases made of cement co-existing with Art Deco curved mirrors, graceful custom-made sconces, velvet and rattan textures. The space as a whole gives you a feeling of privacy and proximity, redefining the client’s stance towards the objects of desire – Nikos Koulis’ fine jewellery.
Designed by the Athens-based Stage Design Office, Stavros Papagiannis & Giorgos Kyriazis, in close collaboration with the brand owners, Nikos Koulis Jewels Boutique goes far beyond a normal commercial store, inviting its clients to experience the intimacy of an unrestrained, private moment.
Alexandros Papadias designed the marble sconces, the tailor-made vitrine étalage, as well as the bronze door knobs. Michalis Anastasiadis designed the satin brass lights, while Cypriot artist Socrates Socratous created an in-situ installation in the outdoor display area. Classic music can be heard from the outdoor loudspeakers, creating a special mood for visitors and reflecting Nikos Koulis’ special philosophy.” All images courtesy of Stage Design Office.
